Anyone For A Caramel Apple?
Well Michigan has that cold crisp feel in the air that wakes you in the morning and makes you crave a hot mug of apple cider! Which can mean only one thing....it's Autumn! My favorite season! Along with cider every fall I look forward to warm wool sweaters, donuts, and above all else a fresh caramel apple! Mine is topped with walnuts! What do you like on your apple?

Hey Gingie!
How much do I love Gingerbread???? Well a lot! Growing up it was a special treat made by my mother at Christmas time, but as an adult I realized that it is a staple cookie throughout the year to other countries. Gingerbread which was first brought to Europe around 992 by an Armenian monk named Gregory of Nicopolis, had by the 13th century made its way to Sweden via German immigrants where Nuns from the Vadstena Abbey began baking it to aid with digestion (probably needed on account of all that sparse abbey food!). From there its popularity grew and Gingerbread evolved over time into what we know today.
The Grimm's Cookies Gingerbread isn't quite Medieval but more what a
German of the 1800's would recognize. Perhaps even what Queen Victoria, her husband Albert and their brood of children would have enjoyed. It's dense and spicy more so
then what most Americans are use to. Now that I make it year round I stick to simple Gingerbread bites that I dubbed Gingies. Thanksgiving through Christmas I bake Gingerbread Men and Ladies as well as Gingerbread Houses with all the trimmings.Anytime of year it's a treat!

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?
Not I :) The Wolf is made from Dark Chocolate and the back of the lolly is covered in hazelnuts. The three pigs are actually Peppermint pigs; made from white chocolate and crushed peppermints. Yum!

A Moose Confection
I love Scandinavian Fairy tales and when I think of them the first images that pop to my mind are Trolls, deep dark forest and all the creatures that dwell within it such as Moose, Elk, and Bears.The artwork of John Bauer is some of my favorite too. So to celebrate that here's a sweet little Moose :)

Cruel Frederick
Struwwelpeter
by Heinrich Hoffmann
Unfortunately Frederick has temper issues. Don't we all though ;)
This Frederick! this Frederick!
A naughty, wicked boy was he;
He caught the flies, poor little things,
And then tore off their tiny wings;
He kill'd the birds, and broke the chairs,
And throw the kitten down the stairs;
And oh! far worse and worse,
He whipp'd his good and gentle nurse!
The trough was full, and faithful Tray
Came out to drink one sultry day;
He wagg'd his tail, and wet his lip,
When cruel Fred snatch'd up a whip,
And whipp'd poor Tray till he was sore,
And kick'd and whipp'd him more and more;
At this, good Tray grow very red,
And growl'd and bit him till he bled;
Then you should only have been by,
To see how Fred did scream and cry!
So Frederick had to go to bed;
His leg was very sore and red!
The Doctor came and shook his head,
And made a very great to-do,
And gave him bitter physic too.
But good dog Tray is happy now;
He has no time to say "bow-wow!"
He seats himself in Frederick's chair,
And laughs to see the nice things there:
The soup he swallows, sup by sup,-
And eats the pies and puddings up.

Oh Canada! Maple Walnut Cookies!!!!
These are really yummy! The theme is Oh Canada. Canada is a beautiful country made up of a plethora of different cultures but I always think of, (well first Inuit, but right after that) the immigrants coming from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. These two cookies pay homage to them. I also use these two for Shortbread. One of my favorites :)

Life on the Farm
These are a collection of quarter sized Springerle cookies depicting life on the farm. From top to bottom a Chalet or Farmhouse, a Rooster, a Woman Cooking, two Bee Hives, a Dog carrying a basket, a Stag leaping over a fence, a Boy on a Rocking Horse, and a Bouquet of Roses. These are really nice because there bite size and great for kids or someone watching their figure. They make a great addition to any get together.

God Save the Queen!
One of my biggest cookies. I think of her as Elizabeth 1st, but really she could be any Queen of yore. She measures about 9” tall x 3 1/2”. She's so tall you can share with a friend. She'll have you saying, "off with her head!" (Sorry I couldn't help myself :) She is rather beautiful though and her dress has a great amount of detail in it. A really fun cookie I make it in Springerle and Gingerbread.
